The Scottish Borders is an administrative county of Scotland located in the south of the country, sharing a border with Northumberland in England. Kelso Abbey

Founded in the 12th Century by a community of Tironensian monks, Kelso Abbey overlooks both the River Tweed and the River Teviot. Although the Abbey was disestablished in 1559, its ruins still stand and are protected by Historic Scotland. When flying over Kelso, the Abbey is one of the defining landmarks that can be seen from above and will likely be pointed out by your pilot.

St Mary’s Loch

Known as the largest loch in the Scottish Borders area, St Mary’s is located in between Selkirk and Moffat, about 45 miles south of the capital, Edinburgh. The loch takes its name from an old church that was dedicated to St Mary, which used to stand on its northern shore. However, this building no longer stands and only its burial ground is visible. As with the many myths and legends surrounding Scottish lochs, it is believed that St Mary’s has no bottom, as well as that it might be the coldest loch in the country. Jedburgh

The town of Jedburgh is often seen from the skies on a hot air balloon flight in this region. It has many notable landmarks that are often pointed out, including the ruins of Jedburgh Abbey and Jedburgh Castle. There are also many famous historical buildings here, including a house belonging to Mary, Queen of Scots.
